Myths about summer

In the past two months we had records breaking hot weather and we are told more will happen in the future. Our doctors asked our expert Marc Holl, head of primary care and Dr Unnati Desai, national GP lead, for an opinion about some of these popular myths.

You can catch a cold from air conditioner

Can you catch a cold from air conditioning? Why is winter so miserable and why do people complain about it so often? Is that just chill? What does an air conditioner do to help prevent colds and other ailments? Even though AC filters are prone to allergies or constant sneezing they can also cause a cold to occur unless there has been a clean air filter at home. But sometimes it's impossible to find a simple answer, and there are other AC issues which may trigger a cold.

AC may make you sick from colds and other allergic symptoms. Does air conditioning actually cause illness? Some people complain of air conditioner sickness, it may be their HVAC system that is the problem. That's a bit false. The air conditioner doesn't cause any symptoms, but is merely conducive in some ways to ill conditions that are causing the most pain and suffering. I'm sure it won't be a problem for me at all. Keeping your HVAC equipment in good working order is important for the prevention of any illnesses caused by the air conditioning system.

Too much water may leave you over hydrated

The steamy summers are dedicated to dehydration and keeping us safe with adequate food. But over hydration can cause health risks as well as an increased risk. Roberta Anding RDN, a dietitian from Rice University Houston, says: “If I push the wheels too hard and end up in a ditch I am dehydrated. The consequences from drinking water excessively are hyponatremia.

Although we often remind people to drink enough water, we find that it is tricky to do so. It'll still feel like an appendage when you get a bottle of water. After awhile you may start noticing how dry your skin is. The excessive drinking can result from hyper anthemia and can be dangerous for a person to drop blood sodium levels in their system.

In a case known as water poisoning, over hydration dilutes body salts resulting in a loss of electrolytes and sodium levels. It causes homeostasis in several areas of your body, including your memory muscle and the bladder. If the symptom persists, you should seek medical attention immediately and stop drinking too much. Although relatively uncommon, over hydration could have multiple consequences.

Does hot weather worsen your period?

Written by Devinder Bains. High heat and sweat aren't good during periods of heat. This interview is from Shirin Lakhani, a leading expert in intimate wellness who has a wealth of experience in managing midsummer menstruation. The menstruation process may cause severe psychological and gastrointestinal problems and can have a number of negative health consequences including headaches, dehydrations, bruising, insomnia and headache. Add to the hot summer temperatures and you have something else you've never had before and things start to turn nasty. Soaring temperatures, dehydration and sweating during periods are not good conditions.

Even avid summer lovers will find menstruating during a heat wave a bit of a problem. Menstrual stress and long periods of very hot weather combined can create very uncomfortable days for the body. Even though you can delay the start of summer by taking contraception pills, you should understand that warmer temperatures can affect menstruation. With careful planning this month will be much more pleasant.

Stretching isn’t crucial during summer

Often times we skip stretches because we feel they are a key part of a healthy life. Stretching has several beneficial aspects. While the research into stretching seems mixed there are legitimate physical and mental benefits that can come from integrating this technique in a routine. But a good first step to understanding the benefits is to learn to define what stretch means.

Over time accumulated physical strain may begin to affect our body. Overuse of muscles may result in chronic tightness and soreness, and compression and tension on joints can cause pain. Joint inflammation can also cause the muscles to become tightened via splintering muscles. It can cause an acute pain-spasm-pain cycle that is hard for someone who started it in the beginning. Stretching was simple. It mainly extends muscles and soft tissues. Taut soft tissue limits movement regardless of tight muscular tissue. Stretches are helpful for stopping such processes from causing damage.

However, your body temperature has very little to do with warming up before activity. It enables a gradual rise in heart rate so that, when you begin to engage in more intense exercise, your heart is prepared for the change.

In addition to increasing blood flow to your muscles, warming up helps your body get ready for exercise. As a result, there will be a lower chance of injury and a better workout.
